Sombre Goldenring (Cordulegaster bidentata)

Description

The males have a body length of 69 to 78 mm, the females (with laying spine) 74 to 83 mm. The wingspan is 84 to 95 mm.

The thorax and abdomen are black with yellow markings, their eyes are green. The forehead is yellow and has a thick bar. The occipital triangle, which lies on the rear edge of the head between the eyes, is yellow. Segments S5 to S8 of the abdomen each have only one ring, S2 to S4 have two.

The male is waisted at abdominal segment S3 and broadens at S7 and S8.

The female is not waisted and has a spine that clearly protrudes over the abdomen.

Hunting type

The Sombre Goldenring is not a permanent flyer, but hunts in flight or lies in wait for prey.

 

Habitat

It is a watercourse species that colonises areas close to springs, which are usually located in forests.
