Western clubtail (Gomphus pulchellus)

Description

The body length is 47 to 50 mm with a wingspan of 56 to 65 mm.

Males and females look almost identical. They have a yellow to greenish ground colour with a black abdominal upper side on which a continuous light band can be seen. The thorax is yellow with three lines on the sides and has thin black lines on the upper side.

The male is somewhat slimmer than the female and has a slightly waisted abdomen.

Hunting type

The Western clubtail hunts from a perch close to the ground.

Habitat

It favours stagnant or slow-flowing waters. It can be found in small lakes and ponds, oxbow lakes or fish ponds with banks that have little vegetation.
