Vagrant darter (Sympetrum vulgatum)

Description

It has a body size of 35 to 40 mm with a wingspan of 50 to 60 mm.

Its legs are black with a yellowish stripe. The black, moustache-like stripe running down from the forehead along the eyes is also characteristic.

The male has a brown thorax with black lines and a red, club-shaped abdomen.

The female's abdomen is yellow, but can also become reddish in colour with age. It has a black longitudinal line on each side. The ovipositor is clearly visible and protrudes at right angles.

Hunting type

The Vagrant darter hunts from a perch, usually a branch or the ground.

Habitat

It colonises stagnant bodies of water that vary in size, are rich in nutrients and have structurally rich reed vegetation.
