Keeled Skimmer (Orthetrum coerulescens)

Description

It has a body length of 36 to 45 mm with a wingspan of 58 to 68 mm.

The wing markings (pterostigma) are long and yellowish in colour. There are usually light-coloured antehumeral stripes on the thorax.

The abdomen of the male is completely blue, while the thorax is usually brown. The eyes are blue.

In the female, the body is yellowish to brownish, the abdomen has a thin black midline on the upper side, which has a black transverse stripe at the end of the segment. On the upper side of the thorax there is a light-coloured line between the wing bases.

Hunting type

The Keeled skimmer hunts from a perch, with about half of the flights being hunting flights.

Habitat

It colonises slow-flowing small bodies of water that are very shallow and warm up quickly. It is important for it that the water surface is open and well sunlit in summer.
