The Emperor dragonfly (Anax imperator) is a very large dragonfly with bright blue and green colours. As one of the largest species in Central Europe, it has a body length of around 9 cm and a wingspan of 11 cm. Males and females can be distinguished by their appearance.
The males have a green thorax (chest) and a blue abdomen (rump), which has a jagged, black dividing line at the top. In females, this dividing line is brown and the sides of the abdomen are green.
It colonises stagnant and slow-flowing waters that have a medium to high water temperature. The territory can be several hundred square metres in size.
