Dainty damselfly (Coenagrion scitulum)

Remark

For some years now, the forked damselfly has been expanding its range in Baden-Württemberg. Observations have also been made in the Black Forest.

Description

It has a body length of 30 to 33 mm with a wingspan of 30 to 40 mm.

Like all azure damselflies, it has the typical seam pattern on both sides of the thorax. The antehumeral stripes are continuous and narrow.  It has long, light-coloured pterostigmata.

The male has a blue thorax and a blue abdomen with black markings. On the abdominal segment S2 there is a fork-like marking, the segments S3 to S5 are half black with spearhead-like markings; S6 and S7 are completely black.

The female has a variable ground colour ranging from greenish-brown to blue. Segments S3 to S8 have a torpedo-shaped pattern.

Hunting type

The Dainty damselfly hunts from perches.

Habitat

It colonises waters that are not deep, have submerged vegetation and are well exposed to sunlight.
