Common darter (Sympetrum striolatum)

Description

It has a body length of 35 to 44 mm with a wingspan of 50 to 62 mm.

It has light-coloured spots on the sides of the thorax and slightly tinted wing bases. The legs are black and yellow striped. There is a black stripe at the base of the forehead, which ends at the eyes.

The male has two light-coloured bands on the sides of the thorax, giving the impression that it is striped. Its abdomen is red.

The abdomen is yellow with a longitudinal stripe on both sides. The vagina is barely visible and protrudes at an angle.

Hunting type

The Common Darter likes to hunt from clear spots or the light-coloured ground.

Habitat

It colonises stagnant waters that would be favoured and also areas of flowing waters that have a low current.
