Blue featherleg (Platycnemis pennipes)

Description

It has a body length of 35 to 37 mm with a wingspan of 40 to 48 mm.

It is the only species found in Germany with a double antehumeral stripe on the thorax. Its widely spaced eyes are also striking. The tibiae of the 2nd and 3rd pair of legs are clearly widened and appear feathered.

The male has a light blue base colour, whereby the colour tone differs significantly from that of the slender dragonflies.

The female is usually greenish, cream-coloured or even blue.

Hunting type

The Blue featherleg hunts exclusively from a perch close to the ground.

Habitat

It colonises slow-flowing and stagnant waters.
