It has a body length of 32 to 39 mm with a wingspan of 60 to 68 mm.
The body is black in both sexes and has large colourful spots on the thorax and abdomen. On the abdominal segments S2 to S7 they are almost as large as the segments and triangular. The pterostigmata and appendages are black.
In the male, the abdomen is club-shaped, the spots on segments S2 to S6 are red-brown, the one on S7 is yellow.
The female has yellow spots on the relatively broad abdomen.
La Leucorrhine à gros thorax colonise les eaux marécageuses stagnantes, pauvres en nutriments et au pH neutre. On le trouve également dans les anciennes fosses de tourbage.
