It has a body length of 30 to 34 mm with a wingspan of 30 to 40 mm.
The upper side and the sides of the abdomen are coloured black with the exception of segment S8. S8 is mostly blue in colour, but there are also other colourations in females. The pterostigmata are diamond-shaped.
In males, the head, the base of the abdomen, the thorax and the tail light are blue in colour. The underside of the abdomen of segments S3-S6 is yellow. The pterostigmata are bicoloured dark grey / white divided.
The female occurs in several colour forms: 2 juvenile and three in adult females. In most forms, the tail light on S8 is blue. The underside of the eye is green.
