Willow emerald damselfly (Chalcolestes viridis)

Description

It has a body length of 39 to 48 mm with a wingspan of 47 to 58 mm.

The thorax and abdomen of both sexes are metallic green without blue stripes. The jagged markings on the sides of the thorax are characteristic. Their pterostigmata are large and light in colour.

In males, the abdominal appendages are light in colour and curved inwards.

In females, the abdomen is somewhat thicker with a thick ovopositor.

Hunting type

The Willow emerald damselfly hunts from perches in rushes, tall grass or bushes.

Habitat

It colonises a variety of bodies of water that are either standing or flowing slowly. Trees with soft wood are important, as it lays its eggs in the wood.
