It has a body length of between 67 and 76 mm with a wingspan of 9.5 to 10 cm.
In both sexes, the sides of the thorax are green with black stripes. The large oval green antehumeral stripes are striking in both sexes and make the species easy to recognise.
The abdomen is patterned blue-green-black in males, while it is patterned green-brown in females.
It colonises small, stagnant bodies of water and can also be found in slow-flowing waters. As its habitat requirements are low, it can also be found in garden ponds or even in rain barrels. Larger watercourses are also colonised if they are rich in structure.
