Southern emerald damselfly (Lestes barbarus)

Description

It has a body length of 40 to 45 mm with a wingspan of 43 to 56 mm.

Males and females look similar. The thorax and abdomen are metallic green to copper-coloured. Their antehumeral stripes are broad and light in colour. The back of the head is sharply defined and yellow on the underside. The pterostigmata are bicoloured - light brown on the inside, whitish on the outside.

The male is slightly blue coloured on the upper side of the abdominal segment S10.

The female does not have a blue stripe on S10.

 

Hunting type

The Southern emerald damselfly hunts from perches in the vegetation near the ground.

Habitat

It colonises very small temporary bodies of water or bodies of water whose water level fluctuates greatly and which are exposed to the sun all day long, with rush cover.
