Scarlet darter (Crocothemis erythraea)

Remark

The Scarlet darter is only occasionally observed in the Black Forest. 

Description

It has a body length of 36 to 45 mm with a wingspan of 50 to 58 mm.

The abdomen is flattened. The base of its hind wings has an ochre-yellow spot.

In males, the entire body, eyes and legs are bright red in colour and have no black markings.

The female's basic colour is brown-yellowish. They have a light-coloured line between the wing bases.

Hunting type

The Scarlet darter hunts exclusively in flight.

Habitat

It prefers shallow stagnant waters that are well sunlit and have well-developed underwater vegetation.
