Ruby whiteface (Leucorrhinia rubicunda)

Remark

The Ruby whiteface is only rarely found in Baden-Württemberg. It is also sometimes doubted whether it can be found here at all.

Description

It has a body length of 31 to 38 mm with a wingspan of 55 to 64 mm.

Its body is black and has coloured spots on the thorax and abdomen, which are about medium in size. The spot on the abdomen segment is about ¾ the size of the segment.  The front edge of the wings is yellow. Males and females differ in the colour of their spots.

The male has dark red spots on the abdomen, which turn brown with age. In contrast, the female's spots are relatively large and yellowish in colour.

Hunting type

The Ruby whiteface hunts from a raised stand.

Habitat

It loves standing bog water with peat moss, which is low in nutrients and acidic.
