Red-veined Darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii)

Description

It has a body length of 33 to 40 mm with a wingspan of 54 to 63 mm.

The base of its hind wings has a yellow spot. The pterostigmata are light in colour with a black edge. The eyes are red with a blue edge at the bottom, the legs are black with yellow stripes.

The male has a red thorax, which often has light-coloured stripes, and a red abdomen. The face is also red. The wing veins are also red, especially at the base.

The female is yellow with an almost continuous black stripe on the side.

Hunting type

The Red-veined darter hunts from a perch and likes to sit on dry stalks or branches.

Habitat

It occurs in almost all types of water bodies.
