It has a body length of 33 to 36 mm with a wingspan of 40 to 50 mm.
Its thorax is black with yellow sides. The abdomen is red and black in colour. Its legs are black.
The male has a red abdomen with black parts in the area of segments S7 to S9.
There are four forms of the female, which have different proportions of black: forma fulvipes is similar to the male, but has slightly more black colouring. In the forms typica and intermedia, segments S2 to S6 are black in colour, while segments S7 to S9 are predominantly black.
The Large red damselfly sits at a height of 1 to 2 metres in the bushes or grass to hunt from there.
It colonises different types of water that tend to be cool. In addition to ponds and ponds, this also includes garden ponds or calm river areas.
