Emerald Damselfly (Lestes sponsa)

Description

It has a body length of 35 to 39 mm with a wingspan of 35 to 50 mm.

The basic colour of its body is metallic green. The back of the head and its pterostigmata are dark.

In males, the segments S2, S9 and S10 of their abdomen are blue in colour. Their eyes are also blue. The lower abdominal appendages are straight.

The female has no blue stripes. The green spots on the abdominal phalanx S2 are triangular. The ovopositor at the barely thickened abdominal end does not protrude beyond segment S10.

Hunting type

The Emerald damselfly hawker hunts from perches on reeds or rush stems.

Habitat

It colonises stagnant bodies of water that are well sunlit and have distinct vegetation with rushes, sedges and similar plants.
