Common winter damselfly (Sympecma fusca)

Description

It has a body length of 34 to 39 mm with a wingspan of 37 to 47 mm.

Males and females have a brown base colour and are dark brown on the upper side. The segments S3 to S6 have a torpedo-shaped pattern. In contrast to the similar Siberian winter dragonfly, the lower edge of the upper thoracic stripe is straight. The eyes of mature individuals have a bluish tinge.

Hunting type

The Common winter damselfly hunts from a perch near the ground. 

Habitat

It colonises waters with loose reed or sedge vegetation that are well exposed to the sun.
