Brilliant Emerald (Somatochlora metallica)

Description

It has a body length of 5 to 5.5 cm with a wingspan of 7 to 8 cm.

Its body is metallic green in colour and takes on a dark copper sheen with age. The eyes are emerald green. The underside of the abdomen is yellow in colour, with yellow spots on the sides in the area of segments S2 and S3.

The abdomen of the male is club-shaped and has the thickest area at segments S5 and S6.

The female has a more cylindrical abdomen.

Hunting type

The brilliant emerald dragonfly is a pure flight hunter, capable of impressive aerial manoeuvres.

Habitat

It colonises a wide variety of waters, which are mostly stagnant but can also flow slowly.
