Black-tailed Skimmer (Orthetrum cancellatum)

Description

It has a body length of 44 to 50 mm with a wingspan of 72 to 84 mm.

The upper side of the thorax has no light-coloured band between the bases of the wings. The pterostigmata are black.

In males, segments S3 to S7 of the abdomen have a light blue colour, S8 to S10 are black. The sides of the thorax have no light-coloured stripe. The eyes are green.

The female has a yellowish abdomen with dark longitudinal stripes.

Hunting type

The Black-tailed skimmer either hunts from a good position near the bank or sits directly on the ground and hunts from there.

Habitat

It colonises waters with large open water areas.
