It has a body length of 45 to 49 mm with a wingspan of 65 to 70 mm.
The male's body is a metallic blue-green colour. Its wings are almost completely blue in colour except for the wing bases and tips. On the underside of the abdominal segments S8 and S9 there is a reddish to brown signal spot.
The female is metallic green to brownish in colour and has golden-brown, transparent wings, which become less transparent with age.
It colonises narrow watercourses that flow quickly and have clean, cool water with a high oxygen content.
