Banded demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens)

Description

It has a body length of 45 to 48 mm with a wingspan of 58 to 75 mm.

The male's body is metallic blue. The wings are clear with a blue band. The signal spot on the underside of the abdominal segments S8 to S10 is greyish white with black spots.

The female is metallic green with green, transparent wings that have white pseudopterostigmas.

Hunting type

The Banded demoiselle hunts from a vantage point where it lies in wait for prey.

Habitat

They tend to colonise the middle and lower reaches of slow-flowing waters that are well sunlit.
